The Clay Station: COMPLETE!
A Tuesday ribbon cutting at The Art Station's new addition, The Clay Station, drew a crowd of 75 eager to not only see the first commercial pottery studio in the region, but also to watch an artist perform magic on the wheel. Instructor/Potter Denise Austin mesmerized the crowd as she slowly pulled up a slippery red vase saying, "At this fragile stage, almost anything can happen." She then intentionally smashed the vase to her audience's gasps. "It's just dirt," she smiled.
As the crowd flowed down the sidewalk from The Art Station, they could hear "Unchained Melody" playing in the background. The Righteous Brothers song was made famous by the movie "Ghost" as it accompanied the scene of Demi Moore and Patrick Swayze on the pottery wheel. Once inside The Clay Station, the bulletin board revealed a picture of Denise's body photoshopped over Moore's with Swayze right behind her on the wheel. Thanks to Donna Mollere for her techno creativitiy.
Owner and Director Kim Zabbia began construction of The Clay Station shortly after Christmas, but she said the plans have been "in the works" since The Art Station opened almost four years ago. "We kept changing the drawings, moving the location, saving the pennies, but yes, it's something Zab and I have wanted to do for a long time."
Bob Zabbia, Kim's husband, has even registered for an April class and found no problem encouraging three of his buddies to join him at the wheel. Since there are four wheels, friends are signing up together to make the class a social outing as well as a learning experience.
"Clay is such good therapy," Kim added. "Sure, it slides easily through your fingers, but better than that, clay soaks up your anxiety and your stress and leaves you feeling connected somehow to the earth. You're more grounded after a clay experience."
